How to actually use your phone in moderation

Ask how to spend less time on your phone, and you’ll hear the same advice: Do a digital detox. Delete your apps. Disappear into the woods and become an old hermit. Buy a flip phone and enjoy taking terrible pictures. Okay, maybe nobody’s literally telling you to become a hermit. But a lot of the advice amounts to the same thing: if your phone is a problem, get rid of it—or get rid of everything you like about it. But I want to use my phone. I just don’t want to spend half my evening on it without meaning to.
Quitting isn’t the same as moderation
Your phone is your camera, your map, your calendar, and how you keep in touch with people. Even the apps you spend too much time on can contain things you actually enjoy. Deleting them doesn’t teach you how to use them in moderation. A digital detox might give you a break, but what happens when the break ends? You’re back with the same phone, the same apps, and the same habit of opening them whenever there’s an empty moment. We keep getting advice about how to stop. What’s missing is a practical way to keep using the things we like—and know when to put them down.
The solutions shouldn’t be another chore
I wanted something that helped with that automatic reach for my phone. Something that didn’t require effort to set up, be pushy about asking for donations, or make me do pushups or write a journal entry before opening an app (looking at you, every other Screen Time app out there). I couldn’t find a solution that got that balance right for me. So I built Screenlime. A full-ass solution to one specific problem: opening an app without thinking, then staying longer than you meant to.
A few seconds to decide
Screenlime adds a shield between you and your trouble apps. When you try to open one, you have to wait a few seconds. That little pause gives you time to notice what you’re doing. Did you come here for something? Or did your thumb just take you here again? If you still want to open the app, you can. After 15 minutes, it becomes shielded again, giving you another chance to decide whether to keep scrolling. All your other apps open instantly, like they always do. That’s literally it. You keep your phone, your apps, and your good camera. You get a moment to make a choice.
Have something else to reach for
Screenlime works best when you bring some intent, patience, and something else you’d enjoy doing. Keep a book nearby. Put a sketchbook on your desk. Leave your knitting within reach. Pick up a handheld game you’ve been meaning to play. It doesn’t have to be productive, and it doesn’t have to be completely non-digital. The point is to spend your time doing something you chose. You may start noticing just how often you reach for an app without a reason. Each pause is an opportunity to leave it closed and do something else. You won’t choose that every time. You don’t have to. Moderation leaves room to enjoy your phone—and then get on with your day.
Screenlime is completely free for one app. Download it on the App Store. Made for iPhone and iPad.
